Wind Generator For Your Home Anyone?

Wind power is such a novel idea that many people (true enough) still balk at the very thought that they can create wind generator devices on their own. With a whole range of do-it-yourself wind generator products being offered out there (complete with technical support too) anyone can build wind generator and turbines on their own. Very often, homeowners will make wind generator devices in order to harness the power of the wind. Wind power can be accumulated in these generators so that it can be converted later on to much needed electricity supply. Other times, the simplest wind generator is used primarily to convert the kinetic energy into low watt electrical power.

However, the term “novel” idea is really a misnomer. People have been utilizing one or more types of wind generators for ages. The most prominent examples would be agricultural windmills. These mills, especially the very iconic conical towers with very large fan blades, were used as grinding mills for all types of grains, usually to make bread flour. These run on wind power alone, since generators were still considered as technology yet to be introduced. When wind power fails (for one or more reasons,) it is easy enough to run the mills manually or through oxen power. Leaner wind mills on ranches and farms were eventually used as water pumps to supply water to animals and crops; and these too were wind generator free.

These days, wind power can be utilized better because of generators. These machines are often times attached to the back head of the rotating blades, with cables and wires extending down to an actual electricity storage device. Some free standing wind turbines have underground storage devices, while others can be kept safely within a corner of a shed or garage. These are then connected to the house or architectural structure’s electrical supply for easy use. Depending on the actual kinetic “harvest” of the turbines, some can help cut down conventional utility bills by 10% to 25% annually.

There are some campsites, mobile home parking areas and picnic areas that have either one large free standing wind turbine, or several smaller and swiveling turbines for their patrons’ use. Cable jumpers are attached to the provided generator so that “free” electricity could be supplied. (The customer would have to pay for the use of the cables and electrical outlets, though.) Such devices are enough to sustain the campers’ lights, electric fans and even radios for a period of time. As long as there is wind, and that the generator is not overloaded, some of these turbines are good enough to last for the campers’ entire time in the park.

For home use, wind power is solely used for the harvesting of the kinetic energy of moving air that could be converted into electricity. The output is still relatively small, and it is still quite impossible to run an entire household on mere wind power alone. However, when combined with conventional electricity supply, or even solar power, wind power can be a viable source of clean, dependable energy.

  1. Really nice blog…
Something that most people miss is the batteries, for the past 15 years our family has been living off the grid and we have found that to build a wind generator, the most important part remains the deep cycle batteries…
